Erosion is the process in which material is worn away from the Earth's surface, as previously stated in the vocabulary list. Some causes of erosion could be water flowing. In a nearby canyon there are several "ditch" areas that have been created by rainwater flowing down through the trail.

Deposition can be identified as the natural process of laying down matter. For example, rock slides, land slides, and avalanches are all forms of deposition. These are usually caused by a sudden shift in the composition of the crust or by weather changes. Land slides may occur after a sudden spout of rain.

Erosion and deposition are similar by the way that they both disrupt the soil's natural composition.
